TAB was first registered as Bangkok Association of the Blind and later changed to the Association of the Blind of Thailand in 1982 and Thailand Association of the Blind in 1997. The purpose of TAB establishment is to serve as the national organization of the blind where blind people could take collective action in terms of self-help and self-empowerment of blind people, protection and campaign for equal rights and opportunities in all aspects for the blind, and taking initiatives in several development projects and activities to improve the quality of life for blind people. TAB is known as the major civil rights organization in the field of blindness and has grown both in terms of membership, organizational structures, and services. TAB national headquarter is located in Bangkok and has 11 provincial branches with almost 14,000 members across the country. TAB activities include leadership training, non-formal education, and self-organizing vocational training, braille and talking book library service, and some vocational programs for the blind such as massage trainings, basic computer trainings, etc. TAB is also a member of organizations of the World Blind Union (WBU) and the International Disability Alliance (IDA).
