On June 4, the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (BERSIH 2.0), an NCBM coalition member, organized a Townhall Meeting on Access to Voting by Persons with Disabilities. The event’s objective was to engage with the community, obtain feedback on their concerns regarding voting and the next General Election and raise public awareness on issues relating to access to voting for people with disabilities. Around 50 participants registered for the event, which was divided into three sessions: (1) an overview of Bersih’s proposal on institutional reforms and how the Person with Disabilities community can play a role; (2) presentations from stakeholders and community leaders on gaps and challenges of existing laws and regulations relating to access to voting for persons with disabilities; and (3) sharing of experiences, including recommendations and suggestions on improving access to voting for persons with disabilities. BERSIH 2.0 intends to produce a memorandum incorporating concerns and recommendations for reforms to be sent to the Election Commission through the event.
